The Short Answer

It depends on the studio, so the only answer that counts is the date in your contract. Ask for three dates before you sign: the sneak peek, the full photo gallery and each film. Photos usually come before video, because editing a film takes far more hours than editing a gallery.

What Happens After the Wedding

  1. Backup: every card is copied to at least two places, often the same night.
  2. Culling: thousands of frames get narrowed down to the keepers.
  3. Editing: color and light are matched across the whole set so the day looks like one story.
  4. Film: footage is synced with audio, cut to music, color graded and exported in each version you bought.
  5. Delivery: an online gallery for photos, a private link or download for films.

Why Film Takes Longer

A gallery is a set of still frames. A film is hours of footage and sound that have to be cut into a story, matched to music, color graded and checked from start to finish, often in more than one length. Each finished minute takes hours of work, so plan on getting your photos first.

Get a Sneak Peek Sooner

  • Ask for a handful of photos within a few days for your announcement
  • Ask for a short teaser clip if you booked film
  • Do not post guests' phone photos of the dress before your own photos arrive, if you want the reveal to land
  • Send a thank you and a review once the gallery arrives. It helps a small studio more than you might think

What to Put in the Contract

  • Sneak peek date
  • Full gallery delivery date
  • Highlight film and full edit delivery dates
  • How long the online gallery stays up
  • What happens if a date is missed

While You Wait

Back up the gallery yourself the day it arrives. Download the full resolution files to your computer and to one cloud service, because online galleries do not stay up forever.

When your photos arrive, think about getting your wedding featured, including the Wedwalk Wedding of the Year contest.

Questions Couples Ask

How long is too long to wait for wedding pictures?

Too long is past the date in your contract. If there is no date, ask for one in writing. If a date is missed, ask the studio for an update and a new date before you worry.

What is the turnaround for wedding photos?

It varies by studio and season. Busy months take longer. The date in your contract is the one to plan around.

Do I tip wedding photographers?

Tipping is optional. A tip for assistants and second shooters, a thank you note and an honest review are all welcome.
